May 24, 2011
Charlotte-Aminah Ghaffar and Janina Rahe of Fayetteville Academy produced 3 NCISSA 1A/2A State track championships this weekend leading FA to a 5th place team finish of 22 teams.
Ghaffar, a soph, won her 6th and 7th individual state titles of her young career winning her 2nd consecutive long jump title (16 ft) and cruising to her 3rd straight 300m hurdle championship (47.89). Ghaffar was running her first meet since april 7th and being on crutches for four weeks with a stress fracture. She was cleared to run by her doctor only 10 days before the meet. The rust showed as she was well off of her personal records in any of her events but had enough for the two wins. She also placed 2nd in the 100m hurdles and 5th in the 200m.
Junior Janina Rahe won her first state track title in the shot put (31-3) joining Ghaffar as the only girls to ever win state track titles at FA. Rahe is a foreign exchange student from Germany and unfortunately for FA, will be returning home for her senior season. Amazingly she began throwing the shotput this season. She also placed 4th in the discus.
Coach Kevin Dennison is in his first year coaching track and field at FA, is no stranger to championships, having lead the FA girls basketball to two state championships during his time at the academy. He was assisted by Savion Ashford. The 5th place team finish matches FA's all time best finish set last year. Ghaffar and Rahe scored all of the teams points.
