Campus life > Arts > Chorus
The Fayetteville Academy is very proud to offer a well-rounded arts program to its students. Two parts of this are the General Music and Choral Music programs.
The General Music program begins with pre-kindergarten and continues throughout every grade level in the Lower School to include 5th grade. During weekly music lessons, every student is exposed to many aspects of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, tone, form, etc. The curriculum is based on the educational philosophy of "constructivism" and is designed to build on the skills and knowledge of the previous year to make a better musician, as well as a better student. The curriculum also takes into account the needs of our new students who may not have had the benefit of regular musical instruction before coming to the Academy. In this way, all of our Lower School students may learn and grow together musically. We also offer each student in the Lower School the opportunity to perform each school year. Most grade levels perform at least one time at various special assemblies during the year. We also have a Lower School-wide performance in the spring of each year called "Grandparents and Special Friends Day" at which every grade level performs musical selections appropriate for their level of development. In addition to these performances, we have newly formed choirs in which budding, young singers may get involved. These groups are called "The Troubadours" and "The Trouveres."
Beyond the Lower School, the Academy offers its Middle and Upper School students the opportunity to continue their love of music and performance through vocal and instrumental avenues.
The Choral Program at Fayetteville Academy is one with a long history from the very beginnings of the school and continuing today. Sixth grade students are allowed to select Beginning Choir as their option for an elective during their first year of Middle School. This group meets daily for instruction and performs full public concerts at least three times per year in addition to performing during assemblies and other special events. Students in grades 7 through 12 are offered Varsity Chorus as an elective during the school year, as well. Varsity Chorus is a continuation of skills and knowledge obtained from previous musical experiences. It branches out into new and exciting areas of vocal music including Broadway, Pop, and Classical just to name a few. This group also follows a performance schedule similar to the Beginning Choir; the difference is usually in the difficulty of the music. The Varsity Chorus usually takes a trip in the spring to compete in a national competition.
