visual arts

Pyramids, cathedrals, and rockets exist not because of geometry, theories of structures, or thermodynamics, but because they were first a picture--literally a vision--in the minds of those who built them.” Eugene Ferguson, Historian

The goals of the Visual Arts Department of Fayetteville Academy are to create students who can solve problems through creative deduction, think independently, and inspire others.  In many school systems, whether they are public or private, the visual arts sometimes take a back seat to academics and athletics.  Here at The Fayetteville Academy art is regarded with respect; creativity is significant and is nurtured.  Students at Fayetteville Academy also have the opportunity to join the National Art Honor Society (10th-12th) or National Junior Art Honor Society (7th-9th).

The Lower School is taught on a weekly basis, with the intent to introduce students to a variety of art forms and techniques.  Students explore art through a variety of media, providing them with hands-on experiences designed to allow creative expressions of ideas, emotions, thoughts, and mental images.

In 6th grade students may elect to take art in the second semester.  Sixth graders expand upon their knowledge of the basic art elements, principles of design, and work on developing a wider range of techniques and skills with a variety of media.

In the 7th grade all students take the equivalent of one semester of art.  Projects focus on creating a more artistically independent and creative student.  All lessons are infused with art history and aesthetic perception.

In grades 8 – 12, students may elect to take a year long art class.  Their options are Advanced Art (8-12), Calligraphy (8-12), Ceramics I (9-12), Ceramics II (10-12), Portfolio Studio Art (10-12), and AP Studio Art: Drawing, 2-D, and 3-D (11-12).  (See Upper School/Course Descriptions/Electives for course descriptions.)

During the year student work is displayed in the Alumni Center for Fine Arts Gallery and in a variety of other areas throughout the school as well as in the community.
