MIDDLE SCHOOL ELECTIVE AND ENRICHMENT COURSES

Elective and enrichment courses include such courses as computer applications, word processing, physical education, art, and any other class not considered a core academic course. Students receive grades in all elective and enrichment courses. However, for the determination of honor rolls, honor society, and academic probation, only the core academic courses of English, math, science, history, and foreign language are utilized. Additionally, a student can earn no lower than 80 in an elective or enrichment course to be eligible for honor roll.

MORE  (6th Grade)
This is a required enrichment course for sixth grade students.  It is gender specific and meets on alternating days throughout the year.  As the name implies, this course provides more life skills within in the normal academic day.  It includes a series of units such as study skills, research skills, global awareness, first aid, nutrition, sex education, and counseling in areas of peer relationships and decision making.

Beginning Band  (6th Grade)  
This class is open to sixth grade students wishing to learn a brass or percussion instrument.  The Band instructor will discuss with the student the specific instrument the student will learn during the first week of class.  The instrument that the student is interested in learning will be a consideration.  Sixth grade students are required to select either Beginning Band or Choral Music as a performing arts class.

Junior Chorus  (6th – 7th Grades)                   
The focus of this class is Choral singing.  Students will also learn how to read and understand written music, and learn about various composers and their music.  Members can expect approximately half an hour of homework per week with several performances scattered throughout the school year.  This course meets every day for 6th graders and alternates with Computer Applications for 7th graders.

Word Processing (6th Grade)
This class is a semester long required enrichment course for sixth grade students that alternates with MORE.  Students will learn appropriate keyboarding skills and basic word processing.

Art 7  (7th Grade)
This course is a year long enrichment class for seventh grade students that alternates with the Computer Application class. Students will experiment with a variety of visual media.

Computer Applications  (7th Grade)
This course is a year long required enrichment course that is taught on alternating days.  Students learn advanced word processing skills, spreadsheets, and Power Point.  Following the completion of this course, students will be proficient in the basic knowledge of computer applications needed in the workplace.

Physical Education  (6th – 8th Grades)
This course will provide students with the opportunity to learn about a variety of games and activities designed to have fun, improve gross motor skills, and instill an appreciation for teamwork.  Students must come to class dressed in appropriate physical education attire.  6th grade PE will be gender based and meet on alternate days in second semester.  7th-8th grade PE will meet every day or on alternate days with a study hall elective.

Study Hall  (8th Grade)
Study hall may be selected as an every day elective option for students who select Physical Education as their second elective.

Study Hall / Physical Education  (7th – 8th Grades)
Study hall will alternate every other day with Physical Education for 7th grade students who wish to take study hall as an elective.  Study Hall will also alternate every other day with Physical Education for 8th grade students unless they wish to take Physical Education every day.

Web Design  (8th – 12th Grades)         
Students will learn how to program a computer to display a web site using Hypertext Markup Language or HTML without the need for web design software. Students will be Level III web page designers, and, as time permits, will have an introduction to XHTML and XML web design programming.

Varsity Band  (7th – 12th Grades)       
Varsity Band is for the student who has a good performing ability and knowledge of an instrument.  This course requires the recommendation of the Band Director.

Varsity Chorus  (8th – 12th Grades)
The Varsity Chorus will study many different varieties of music throughout the year, and showcase their talent at several performances.  Emphasis will be placed on reading music, understanding theory, developing listening skills, and learning about musical styles and composition.  The Academy Chorus can expect approximately half an hour of homework per week. 

Advanced Art  (8th – 12th Grades)      
This class is for students who desire to improve their artistic abilities and discover new ones. All projects focus on the elements of art, the principles of design, and creativity.  Students are encouraged to keep a portfolio of their work for subsequent art courses.

Ceramics I   (8th – 12th Grades)         
This class is for students who desire to learn the basics of hand building techniques: pinch, coil, and slab.  Near the end of the year, the wheel will be introduced. Projects are designed to give the students direction but enable them to interpret themes/techniques in their own way.

Calligraphy I  (8th – 12th Grades)      
Students will be introduced to the history of the alphabet and learn several different hands or scripts. Students will learn about an alphabet/script, practice it, and then produce a high quality project that uses the script in a creative way. Students will be required to keep a sketchbook which will serve as their mid-term and final exam grade.

Piano or Voice  (7th – 12th Grades)
Students may elect to utilize one study hall per week to take for-pay piano or voice lessons.  Cost is $25.00 for a 25 minute session and $40.00 for a 50 minute session.  For additional information, contact ematson@fayettevilleacademy.com.
